everything; something; nothing
I once wrote a tale   of how the robins got their red bosoms from the static of touch.   I did not whisper it into any ears, but as my windows        tired from being ajar     in the wait of a bouquet of serenades, I plucked colors out of my skin   and placed them in a vase.    Now, I am still alone, but bask in my own shadow’s comfort.   The robins outside have their  tails aligned with their beaks. But I count thoughts like sheep       while I try to sleep      and curl up into a question mark,    asking nothing. Can you hear the wings aflutter—can you hear the smooth of my arm turnto black and white— can you hear my vase cracking. No— listen:    the robins’ myth was just a coax.   You cannot paint in watercolor on paper   as coarse as my tongue without letting the lines bleed.I cannot ask for your     embrace tonight. The birds are  already in their nests andI have dipped fallen feathers in ink.   I must go now before I forgetmy story. I will not stop the colors from wilting.
